April Fishing Comp Results 2010

The weather for the April comp restricted most fishers to the creeks and land based. A couple of boats ventured (or attempted to) out wider but didn't get any further than the north cardinal. However, some great creek fish were weighed including some nice Jack, Bream, Whiting, Barra and Flathead. The boats that made it outside found some quality Doggie Mackerel around the shipping channel.

Fishing at Aplins Weir by Keith Ledger

Been catching some nice barra on live bait & not so live bait at Aplins Weir. Best baits have been milkfish, mullet, bony bream and tarpon about 20-30cm long - everything gets hit! Live bait have been easy to find in the lagoon down from the weir or in the lakes near Castletown – use an aerator to keep them alive for long enough. You will only need 6-8 big baits per person so only take what you need – put too many in a bucket and they just die anyway.
Using a single hook rig (7/0 or 8/0) on 60-80lb leader and no sinker, just hook the bait through the top of the mouth. Simply chuck them out - nothing fancy.

You can also use small herrings on the same rig to get smashed by big bream & jacks. Just scale down the hook size. Float the baits out and give the fish time to take the bait properly and it starts to swim away from you - don’t strike on the first bite.

Fishing Aplins is great fun for the kids both young & old. The best time to fish is the last couple of hours before and after dark & DON’T FORGET THE MOSSIE SPRAY.
Good luck all & have fun.
